A Difference
Community is as much about changing lives as it is about celebrating your own. Casa de Mañana resident Doris Hicks has lived that mantra for more than a decade. After Doris retired as a first-grade teacher and aide for special needs children, she took up volunteering. A lot of volunteering. Doris joined the La Jolla Villagers philanthropic women’s organization, which works with hospice and Meals on Wheels. Two days a week she volunteers at the Mercy Hospital gift shop. She also answers the phones at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church on Sundays and is on the Board of Senior Ministries. It's not surprising that Doris just won an award for more than 1,000 hours of volunteer work.
Leslie Miller is another example of how our residents are making a difference in the community. Leslie, an accomplished pianist, has been an active volunteer at Scripps Memorial Hospital for five years. The patients there light up when Leslie sits down at the piano – she’ll even sing a few tunes on request. When she finds herself with some spare time, Leslie occasionally gives impromptu performances for Casa de Mañana’s residents.
